Fiddlin’ Doc Roberts recorded Buck Creek Gal at an August 26, 1927, session in Richmond, Indiana. It was released as Champion #155500, credited to the pseudonym Fiddlin’ Jim Burke.

The tune is unusual structurally. It can be broken into three primary sections:

  1. An eight-bar ‘A’ section in E minor
  2. An eight-bar ‘B’ section in G major
  3. An eight-bar ‘C’ section in G major

The ‘A’ and ‘B’ sections are based on four-bar strains, repeated with minor variation. The ‘C’ section is based on an eight-bar strain, repeated with minor variation.
